Hi! My name is Emily Olson de Alvarez, and I teach Music, Language and Culture in room 125. During the first cycle of MLC, we built community by learning more about each other's likes and dislikes, especially surrounding music, practicing how to use the many special materials we have in MLC class including our Piano Keyboard Lab, tubano and djembe drums and guitars. Students were also able to consider and decide on what their personal hopes and dreams were for MLC class this year. All of our Stars' hopes and dreams are on display on the wall outside of 125. We are going to use this cheer to animate and remind of us our potential: "I'm a star, you can see me in the sky, chasing my dreams-watch me fly! Soy una estrella, me puedes ver en el cielo, siguiendo mis sueños, mira hasta donde llego!"

In our second cycle we will be connecting our arts learning to Latinx culture as part of Latinx Heritage Month: 4th and 5th grade students will be learning about Rock legend Carlos Santana while learning to play the guitar, 2nd and 3rd grade students will be learning about singing legend Celia Cruz as they work on their singing technique and piano technique, 1st graders will be talking about family nicknames while they work on their piano technique, and Kindergarten will be learning about Mexican rebozos, their own favorite clothes, and then using clothes as a base for developing rhythms on the tubano and djembe. High-Five is learning traditional circle games including, "El Huevo Podrido" and "A la rueda, rueda".
