Me llamo Emily Olson de Alvarez (Sra. de Alvarez) y soy la maestra de Música, Lenguaje y Cultura en nuestra escuela. El año 2021-2022 es mi séptimo año en la escuela Sheridan y mi decimosexto año como docente. Ha enseñado en lugares distintos: Lima, Peru, Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico, Richfield, South Minneapolis, pero siento que ha encontrado mi “hogar de trabajo” en nuestra escuela. Mi familia y yo vivimos en el vecindario de Northeast, y mis hijos son estudiantes de Sheridan.
Soy de Milwaukee, Wisconsin, y durante mi juventud encontré un amor por la música. Empecé tocando clarinete, estudié en “Milwaukee High School of the Arts”, una escuela pública con un enfoque en los artes, y llegué a Minnesota para estudiar educación de música en la Universidad de Minnesota. Durante mi tiempo en la Universidad profesores y maestros actuales de MPS me abrieron el mente a estudiar conexiones entre el arte (música, danza, etc.) y la cultura. Hasta la fecha estas conexiones junto con la identidad son lo que más me fascinan y me motiva crear y desarrollar currículo para nuestros alumnos. Cada alumno debe de tener oportunidad de desarrollar y reflejar su identidad por medio de los artes, y trato de cumplir este compromiso con cada alumno.
Tengo el privilegio de dar clases a todos nuestras estrellas (estudiantes), desde High-Five-Quinto. De acuerdo a sus edades, etapas de desarrollo, y intereses, aprendemos a cantar, bailar, tocar instrumentos (tambores, piano, xilófonos, ukuleles, guitarra), crear nuestra propia música incluyendo producción musical, responder a diferentes obras de arte y hacer conexiones entre obras de arte y sus contextos culturales y históricos.

My name is Emily Olson de Alvarez (Mrs. De Alvarez) and I am the Music, Language and Culture Specialist teacher at our school. The 2021-2022 school year is my 7th year at Sheridan and my 16th year as a teacher. I’ve taught in different places: Lima, Peru, Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico, Richfield, Minnesota and South Minneapolis, but I feel. Like I have found my work home here in our school. My family and I live in Northeast Minneapolis, and our children are students at Sheridan as well.
I am from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and during my childhood discovered a love for music. I began by playing the clarinet, attended the “Milwaukee High School of the Arts” a public magnet school with a focus on the Arts, and came to Minnesota in order to study Music Education at the University of Minnesota. During my time at the U, professors and MPS teachers that were Mentors to me opened my mind to studying the connection between the Arts(music, dance, etc.) and culture. To this day, these connections, and their contribution to identity is what fascinates me and drives my work with students. All students should have the opportunity to develop and have their identity reflected through the arts, and I try to hold myself to that ideal with each student.
I am fortunate to give classes to all of our Stars (students) from High-Five-Fifth Grade. Following their ages, developmental stages and interests we learn to sing, dance, play instruments (drums, piano, xylophone, ukulele, guitar), create our own music including music production, respond to different artistic works, and make connections between artistic works and the cultural and historical contexts they came from.
